The introduction of new European norms on the safety of transportation systems (CEN TS 45545) and, in Italy, of the act DL 28/10/2005 of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Transportations, prescribes the installation on railway vehicles of highly performing fire detection and fire fighting systems, having high intrinsic safety in accordance with IEC TR 61508 e CEI EN 5012x.
The realization of a competitive fire fighting system for the market requires mastering different key technologies, and an extensive knowledge of norms and requirements of the specific domain, which lead to a technical and financial effort much greater than what a SME can afford. The project foresees a collective strategy, with an industrial consortium supported by a research institution, thus guaranteeing the presence of strategic competences for the realization of a product that is able to compete efficiently, possibly also on the International market.
The working plan foresees the acquisition of new strategic knowledge for the achievement of target performances for the fire fighting system, and subsequently their integration for the realization and validation of a integrate and working product. The collaboration model between companies creates a consortium with the aim to promote an effective path to production. Considering the need to upgrade, in the next 10 years, of around 10.000 vehicles running in Italy only, and estimating a proportional dimension of the International market, it is believed that the project can open interesting market perspectives to its partners.
